Marcus Miller: Tutu Revisited [2 CD + 1 DVD]
Sono passati oltre vent'anni e forse Marcus Miller non ha mantenuto del tutto quello spirito innovativo che Miles aveva individuato per primo e poi alimentato. Ma rimane un eccellente bassista e un buon leader, accompagnato da ottimi giovani musicisti che cercano di tirare fuori le grinfie alle prese con brani che nel frattempo sono diventati dei classici. Il trombettista Christian Scott cerca di calarsi nel ruolo di Miles, senza esagerare coi virtuosismi che la sua ottima tecnica comunque gli consentono. Il giovane saxofonista Alex Han è una scoperta di Marcus Miller e conferma ottime doti solistiche con uno stile maturo e robusto. Le tastiere sono affidate al bravo Gonzalez Pena e la batteria è invece suonata da Ronald Bruner jr., certamente ben affiatato con Miller, un leader molto attento al ruolo della ritmica, come già del resto accadeva con Miles.
Il DVD ci propone l'intero concerto di Lione (circa due ore e mezzo) e un bel documentario di oltre venti minuti con molte riflessioni sul ruolo di Miles nella musica moderna. I due CD riportano i quattordici brani eseguiti in quella occasione, gli ultimi quattro suddivisi in due medley. Le versioni sono lunghe e dilatate, con ampio spazio per gli assoli. Il repertorio, oltre che da Tutu, pesca da altri album di Miles con l'aggiunta del classico "In a Sentimental Mood" scritto da Duke Ellington. Un perfetto veicolo per il clarinetto basso di Marcus Miller, altro strumento nel quale eccelle.
