Indagando ancora una volta nella memoria storica statunitense, Dave Burrell e Steve Swell continuano a trarre spunti musicali dalla guerra civile americana. Ricontestualizzati con eccelsa raffinatezza e gusto musicale, la strumentazione e i temi marziali dell'800 vengono letteralmente ristrutturati nel segno dell'ottica jazzistica. È stata così compiuta un'operazione discografica intelligente oltre che inusuale, rivolta a collegare la mappa musicale statunitense a cavallo tra due secoli.

La versatilità e la classe musicale fanno dei sette brani un concentrato di creatività. Il duo fra trombone e pianoforte tocca alte vette artistiche tra marce, blues ed avanguardia jazzistica. Alla riuscita del CD contribuisce in misura notevole la trasversalità stilistica messa in campo, per produrre efficaci contrappunti ricchi di sfumature.

Piace anche il piglio nel voler ridare nuovo senso e valore musicale agli stilemi del passato con rigore analitico ed espressivo. Il fraseggio dei due musicisti è articolato in infinite screziature timbriche dal tono vociferante, al cui servizio giganteggia un intreccio d'insieme coniugato nelle sue diverse possibilità contrappuntistiche. Oltre alla sopraffina classe musicale, si impongono l'urgenza espressiva e la consapevolezza storica rivissuta con il linguaggio contemporaneo.
