Carolino/Delgado/Fraz: Tuba, Guitarra & Bateria
The trio TubaGuitarra&Bateria (tuba, guitar & drums) is described as a "portable" band. But they are also a very potable band. I'm not imitating a Boston accent pronouncing "portable." They are, as defined, drinkable, and very satisfying.

This unusual lineup certainly reminds you of John Zorn's News For Lulu band, the short lived saxophone, guitar, trombone trio with Bill Frisell and George Lewis. But where News played strictly hard bop, TGB covers Ellington, Monk, and even Led Zepplin.

Yes sir, they end the disc with "Black Dog." Hee hee. It rocks, and why not. The Bad Plus, Brad Mehldau, Charlie Hunter and now TGB pick through music (of their time) that has moved them. It is fair game for improvising. And as listeners (and contemporaries) aren't you a little uncomfortable listening to a young musician cover "Surrey With The Fringe On Top"? Tubist Sérgio Carolino carries the vocal lines while guitarist Mário Delgado applies a twisting, almost turntable sound to his guitar.

The guitarist, a student of John Abercrombie, Atilla Zoller and Bill Frisell, certainly favors Frisell's many moods and penchant for folksy farsidedness.

The music isn't just some "bad" music plus improvisation. These guys make up a jazz band with plenty of humor. Dig it.
