The Phoenix Trio: Tomorrow Is Today

Registrato all'Ornithology di Brooklyn a fine marzo 2025, questo album è l'esatto ritratto di una generazione (o meglio di una costola della stessa) che ha sposato la causa di un jazz molto ritorto sul passato adattandogli un suono—con tutte le virgolette del caso—contemporaneo. Un suono scuro, pastoso, concentrato, a sua volta un po' ritorto su sé stesso, che però ha il grande pregio di appagare la maggior parte di coloro che si occupano di jazz, che si parli di pubblico o di addetti ai lavori (critici in primis). Un jazz rassicurante e anche di bella fattura, non di bieco ricalco ma certamente non attraversato dai sacri (nonché sani) fuochi della ricerca.

Ognuno dei membri di questo trio è un signor musicista, capace di portare l'ascoltatore dalla sua parte (sua e dei suoi compagni di viaggio, ovviamente), di appagare il suo senso della forma nonché di una certa drammaturgia del jazz, il tutto, lo dicevamo, in bella, anzi ottima, calligrafia, e anche un pizzico—ma non di più—di sana inventiva.

E poi? Perché—come recita il titolo del disco -se il domani è oggi, o comunque ha già iniziato a esserlo, dubitiamo che si aggiri da queste parti. Con tutto il rispetto per una musica formalmente impeccabile e—lo ripetiamo—non biecamente supina. Insomma: cui prodest?
