Tocame Son at the Zublin-Haus in Stuttgart

Text by Jacye Swallow

The sultry notes of a lone trumpet bring to mind a balmy night sitting in a café deep in the heart of Cuba, yet this summer night we are just outside Stuttgart. Swaying to the smooth interpretations of classic Cuban rhythms Tocame Son creates the atmosphere we would normally have to travel far to enjoy.

Billed as a Cuban night of dancing and cocktails hosted by the Zublin-Haus the evening promised to delight Jazz and Latin music aficionados alike. In the acoustically gratifying atrium, the quintet Tocame Son performed under cover of a blue sky.

Lead vocalist Wilber Saname's voice intertwined with the lively notes of Emigdio "El Tropa" Narango Gongora on keyboards and punctuated by Humberto Zaldivar on trumpet while Julio Sanchez Quiala on congo drums and Branko Arnsek on base together kept the audience moving in their seats and many on their feet the entire night. Professional Latin dancers Zuzel Palacio and Rafael Baro Elizalde lent to the authenticity and high energy of an evening that finished strong with an arousing encore to the delight of all.
