Forme aperte che però mantengono sempre una forte coerenza interna, inerpicandosi a volte su grooves elaborati, altre esplorando gli angoli più nascosti e astratti che l'incontro tra le linee espressive creano.
Nel linguaggio della Halvorson, lo abbiamo imparato a conoscere bene in questi anni, convergono strane traiettorie melodiche, aromi rock, sfumature timbriche sempre cangianti, accelerazioni quasi prog ed è con grande facilità che sia Fujiwara che il sempre immenso Formanek (tornato ultimamente, anche come leader, a una meritata centralità nell'avant-jazz contemporaneo) aggiungono al tutto una sensibile qualità danzante.
Thumbscrew risulta così un disco di avventuroso equilibrio, animato da un costante movimento che dona a temi come l'iniziale "Cheap Knock Off" o l'eccellente "Goddess Sparkle" una profondità che sfugge alle leggi della gravità e che suona alle orecchie leggera e necessaria. Ottimo lavoro!
