We Three: Three For All
La cifra è quella della libertà dialogica, dell’ascolto reciproco e della risposta espressiva, pur all’interno di cornici tematiche definite, ora classiche - il monkiano “Played Twice”, il davisiano “All Blues”, lo standard “I Only Have Eyes for You” - ora originali.
Vista la formazione - ance, basso elettrico e batteria - il ruolo di Dave Liebman è inevitabilmente centrale, e il sassofonista ne approfitta per sciorinare gran parte della sua ben nota ed unica espressività: esemplari da questo punto di vista la lunga improvvisazione al soprano in “Played Twice”, l’esposizione bluesy del tema di “Up and Adam”, al tenore, la rilassata prolusione, sempre al tenore, in “I Only Have Eyes for You”, e la splendida e originale rilettura di “All Blues”. Inimitabile, dal canto suo, il basso di Steve Swallow, che sostiene ritmicamente le linee delle ance e si ritaglia spazi di improvvisazione, mentre Adam Nussbaum mostra un’ammirevole sensibilità, accompagnando sempre con piccoli, ma significativi pennellate, assai più espressive che ritmiche.
Il disco non ha sbavature, è classico quanto può esserlo un lavoro di musicisti che nella loro lunga carriera non si sono mai soffermati troppo sull’autocompiacimento, né riposati presso stilemi “di scuola”. E alla fine regala tutto quel che può offrire una sentita e divertita registrazione di tre autori che oggi possono giustamente essere considerati dei “grandi” del jazz moderno.
