La ritroviamo ora in tutta la sua aurea classicità in questo doppio CD che ha un valore non solo estetico ma documentario nel segnare l'atto finale di un gruppo esemplare nel suo equilibrio dinamico. È una musica complessa nella sua logica strutturale, un sontuoso laboratorio d'indagine per sottrazioni e addizioni di forze che hanno l'improvvisazione come comune denominatore.
È tutto fuorché una musica sobria, carezzevole come troppo superficialmente si è tentato di spacciarla se si ascolta con attenzione il muscolare drumming di Joe Morello in "St. Louis Blues". C'è dietro una progettualità sperimentale che si manifesta con maggiore forza in esibizioni live come questa. Brubeck è il nume tutelare di una dimensione espressiva magniloquente dove emerge ancora una volta il sax alto vellutato di Paul Desmond. L'inventiva e l'eloquio sono quelli delle occasioni migliori, per produrre assoli meravigliosamente caratterizzati da una eccezionale coerenza narrativa. Il perfetto interplay e la gioia ben percepibile di suonare spiegano il successo e la popolarità di un gruppo entrato nell'olimpo imperituro del jazz.
