Jon Gordon: The Things You Are

Fra i più importanti sassofonisti contralto della giovane generazione c'è da mettere sicuramente Jon Gordon. Dopo gli studi con Phil Woods ha vinto il premio Thelonious Monk per sax alto e firmato interessanti album per la Criss Cross e la Double Time, scegliendo poi la via dell'indipendenza artistica con la Artist Share. Il suo concetto negli anni si è evoluto da bravo interprete della tradizione bop ad improvvisatore a tutto campo, come dimostra questo ambizioso disco dedicato agli standards.

Gordon rifiuta il già detto: ormai quese composizioni fanno parte del suo metabolismo, suonate e risuonate in jam session, proposte dai suoi insegnanti ed adesso girate agli allievi che vanno ad studiare con lui. ha deciso così, con musicisti con cui ha suonato spesso negli ultimi anni, di riinventarli, di farli diventare qualcosa di nuovo e - come fa anche sulla cover del disco - di guradare in avanti. Un paio di brani sono degli originals - "Arco" e "On This Day", in forma free, geniali espressioni di un musicista cui sta stretta la definizione di bopper.

Il resto del disco è diviso con le due formazioni con cui è di solito in giro, con i due batteristi Billy Drummond o Bill Campbell ed il prezioso chitarrista Ben Monder. Le famose melodie sono accennate, disintegrate e ricostruite all'interno di una struttura molto aperta, chiaramente influenzata dalla modalità di un Wayne Shorter. Il sassofono del leader è di un'assoluta forza espressiva, di un'intensità che va al di là di quella che è la tecnica sullo strumento. Bastano un paio di note a farlo subito riconoscere, inconfondibile per come riesce a dare subito un'impronta a quello che fa, indipendentemente dalla velocità con cui sceglie di affrontare le esecuzioni. Il suo concetto improvvisativo è costruito su idee di suono e di atmosfera, in cui i temi sono parte di un equilibrio complessivo fra libertà improvvisativa e fedeltà all'assunto di partenza. L'edificio complessivo si presenta coerente grazie alla bravura dei partecipanti al progetto.

Aperti nelle forme, mai lineari nell'incedere ritmico, questi brani sono uno dei più interessanti contributi al jazz odierno, da parte di chi per l'occasione ha scelto di andare al di là del bop.
