Matt Wilson's Arts And Crafts: The Scenic Route
Alti ma anche bassi in questo percorso, a tratti ben congegnato dal leader con piglio sicuro e la disinvoltura da abile organizzatori di suoni. Tra soluzioni swinganti e rimandi più tipici al jazz più infuocato, le musiche del disco si snodano con l’intenzione di divertire attraverso moods più disparati.
Piace la tromba robusta e sanguigna di Tarrell Stafford, intorno al cui brillante solismo si snodano i continui cambiamenti ritmici del leader e l’ampia gamma timbrica del tastierista Gary Versace. Quest’ultimo è davvero bravo sia al pianoforte che all’organo, dimostrandosi solista elegante e sicuro, dalla fervida immaginazione.
Ma nonostante l’ottimo livello dei musicisti coinvolti, il progetto non decolla per attestarsi su posizioni codificate, che dimostrano la non ancora raggiunta eccellenza del batterista sul piano della leadership e della pratica d’arrangiamento.
Da dimenticare l'insipiente versione pseudo-jazzata di un celeberrimo tema di John Lennon, confusamente - e in modo kitch - intercalato ad armonie ayleriane. Per i palati più esigenti, manca insomma l’effetto sorpresa che faccia volare alto le pur piacevoli tracce, lungo rotte meno prevedibili.
