Dayramir Gonzalez: The Grand Concourse
Nato e cresciuto all'Avana in una famiglia di musicisti (il padre era un noto trombettista di Afro-Cuban Jazz), Dayramir ha iniziato a suonare il piano a 8 anni e all'età di 16 era già un musicista professionista: prima nel gruppo Diakara del percussionista Oscar Valdes e poi col grande Chucho Valdes, che diventò suo mentore. Qualche anno dopo aver pubblicato un primo disco a Cuba dal titolo Habana enTRANCe (Cinquillo 2007), Dayramir s'è trasferito negli Stati Uniti per studiare al Berklee College of Music. Per l'eccezionale talento dimostrato è stato il primo cubano a ottenere il Presidential Scholarship.
Anche per la difficile reperibilità del primo lavoro, quest'album è il suo vero debutto internazionale e colpisce per ricchezza ed eccentricità dei percorsi: momenti di forte tensione ritmica si fondono in altri melodicamente leggeri o cameristici, in un susseguirsi tumultuoso di incisivi assoli e sofisticate soluzioni metriche e ritmiche. Un lavoro ispirato e suggestivo, inciso con un ampio organico latino comprendente un coro e una sezione di archi. Nonostante la giovane età Dayramir mostra una prodigiosa capacità di scrittura facendo convergere gli elementi di cui s'è detto in sviluppi sorprendenti, dove momenti di palpabile tensione s'alternano a distensioni cameristiche o flessuose melodie latine. Niente a che vedere -lo si è capito -con le forme un po' stereotipate del più comune latin jazz.
Tra i brani più rappresentativi del disco ricordiamo "Iyesa con miel," un tema in 7/4 dedicato a Oshun (una delle divinità del pantheon Yoruba) caratterizzato dal canto e dalle percussioni batá di Pedrito Martinez, dall'intervento di Yosvany Terry al contralto e dal piano di González.
