Chumbawamba: The Boy Band Have Won

Mai dire mai. In 25 anni di carriera i Chumbawamba, da Leeds, ne hanno fatte di tutti i colori e musiche. Nati come gruppo anarco-punk impegnato, sono passati attraverso i rigurgiti rave, hanno virato verso la dance-pop (il tormentone “Tubthumping”, 1997, risuona ancora nelle orecchie) e ora si danno al folk Old England come se avessero attraversato tutte le fasi dell’età pop(ular). Si nasce punk, si muore folk. È capitato a tanti, è capitato agli inglesi con cresta bionda/bianca.

Alla base di tutto, che sia rock, dance o pop, c’è l’impegno sociale, rimasto intatto in tutta la sua portata trasgressiva e di denuncia. E così che, nonostante risuonino le tessiture delicate di fisarmoniche e cordofoni tipici del genere, i testi sono corrosivi come mai era capitato di ascoltare.

“Word Bomber” inizia con un arpeggio trasognante e una frase che risuona come un monito: “words, words is all”: “vorremmo fermare queste guerre, ma con le parole non con le bombe”, spiegano e si accendono i riflettori sugli attentati londinesi del luglio 2005.

“I Wish That They’d Sack Me”: le ombre di un licenziamento si diradano col banjo suonato da Dave Crickmore.

Ancora, “El Fusillado” parla di Wenseslao Moguel che fu catturato durante la rivoluzione messicana nel 1915 e senza processo fu condannato alla fucilazione. Per una serie di circostanze, per molti versi inspiegabili, sopravvisse alla fucilazione e al colpo di grazia sparato dal capitano del plotone. Anche qui, nessuno spazio a musiche della disperazione. Tutt’altro: le atmosfere create sembrano evocare la spensieratezza (impegnata) stile Graceland di Paul Simon.

Un CD che si fa apprezzare per i diversi piani di lettura proposti e per il contrasto, quasi sempre riuscito, tra testi e musica. Con buona pace per tutte le boy band del pianeta.
