Ivo Perelman - Gerry Hemingway: The Apple in the Dark

Venti anni di carriera e non li dimostra: è così che potremmo intitolare un articolo sul sassofonista brasiliano Ivo Perelman, che ha deciso di pubblicare una serie di lavori in occasione dell'importante anniversario. Ha sempre avuto, fin dall'inizio, il pallino del free, prima facendosi accompagnare da musicisti locali, poi, dopo l'arrivo a New York, sono iniziate collaborazioni con nomi importanti dell'avanguardia. Allora, su una collana in cui la Leo Records dava spazio agli esordienti, arrivò in trio con William Parker e Rashied Ali, un'esplosione di free che riportava il genere in Sudamerica là dove Gato Barbieri l'aveva lasciato negli anni '60.

Questa incisione in duo con Gerry Hemingway esplora situazioni piuttosto eterogenee, in cui Perelman si cimenta anche con il pianoforte e - artista a 360 gradi - contribuisce anche il disegno astratto che fa da copertina. Il disco è dedicato alla scrittrice brasiliana Clarence Lispector, autrice di un racconto con lo stesso titolo del disco. Ma il disco non intende certamente essere la colonna sonora del racconto. I protagonisti sono altri, Ivo & Gerry, che lentamente estraggono tutto il possibile dai loro strumenti, scoprendo anche lati inaspettati come la poesia, i momenti meditativi...

Attraverso atmosfere molto varie, il disco scorre attirando l'attenzione e mostrando un Perelman che dal debutto ad ora ha dimostrato la capacità di rinnovarsi restando fedele al verbo del free. Ed in fondo, se si ha tanta libertà a disposizione, perchè non utilizzarla? Basta saperlo fare, come lui, in modo creativo!
