Matt Wilson Quartet: That's Gonna Leave a Mark
Come spesso accade, l'apparenza inganna, e non perché l'influenza di Coleman non sia avvertibile in queste brevi pagine il cui vignettismo sfugge immancabilmente alla superficialità per rivelarsi fonte, invece, di molteplici spunti, brevi annotazioni, improvvisi guizzi di colore che indirizzano la trama musicale in più possibili direzioni da esplorare.
Wilson si dimostra ancora una volta uno fra i più interessanti e originali strumentisti oggi sulla scena, nonché autore e interprete di temi vagamente stralunati, in cui una vena poetica apparentemente surreale (che ricorda certi lavori di Phillip Johnston) si avvale di materiali compositi per illustrare un'immagine musicale che non di rado sembra voler evocare - in modo marcatamente trasversale - quel genere denominato "Americana": un gusto melodico che oscilla fra innodia comunitaria e canzone pop ("Getting Friendly," "Come and Find the Quiet Center"), l'eredità boppistica riletta con libertà e rigore al contempo ("Two Bass Hit"), la poetica astrazione colemaniana ("Shooshabuster"), l'intensità del rock abbinata all'energia liberatoria del post-free ("Area Man"), la goia del rito collettivo ("Why Can't We Be Friends?" dei War). Nulla di confusionario, in realtà: Wilson mostra di saper gestire con logica e chiaro senso della forma la messe di frammenti con cui egli disegna un puzzle in cui sagacia e gioioso senso ludico si affiancano.
Non meno ragguardevole e profondo è il contributo degli altri (eccellenti) componenti del gruppo: i sassofonisti Andrew D'Angelo e Jeff Lederer e il contrabbassista Chris Lightcap.
