Phil Haynes: Terra

Un po' a sorpresa, dopo due album tematici avvincenti e di immediata comunicabilità come Return to Electric (Corner Store Jazz, 2025) e Liberty Now! (Corner Store Jazz, 2025) arriva Terra, ancora un album a tema, registrato dal vivo presso la Bucknell University, ma di natura ben diversa. Per l'occasione Phil Haynes, Ben Monder e Peyton Pleninger, si incontrano per la prima volta come gruppo dando vita ad una esecuzione/suite completamente improvvisata.

Gli strumenti vanno ben oltre i rispettivi ruoli, espandono i loro suoni fino a nascondersi o rivelarsi uno nell'altro, solo raramente affiorano dalla superficie in sortite solitarie che suonano come momenti di rottura rispetto ad atmosfere misteriose o alle non infrequenti zone di silenzio e di sussurri. È chiaro come quella presentata in Terra sia musica da godere in tempo reale, nel momento dell'esecuzione, per poterne cogliere la spontaneità, la gestualità dei musicisti, la palpabilità fisica delle vibrazioni e delle onde sonore che inevitabilmente su disco perdono parecchio della loro forza comunicativa.

Unica eccezione i quasi dieci minuti di "Skylark" celeberrimo standard di Hoagy Carmichael del quale viene rispettata la complessa melodia, dove le voci strumentali hanno modo di esibire le proprie peculiarità con discrezione e l'ascoltatore si sente riportare con i piedi "per terra."
