Matt Panayides: Tapestries of Song

Matt Panayides è un chitarrista americano nato a Cincinnati e cresciuto a Indianapolis, abbastanza al di fuori dei giri che contano nel jazz statunitense. Ciò non di meno con questo Tapestries of Song si presenta in maniera autorevole alla testa di un quartetto che mette in campo professionisti ben noti come il saxofonista Rich Perry (membro dell'orchestra di Maria Schneider), il bassista Steve LaSpina (lo ricordiamo dal vivo con Jim Hall, anche in Italia, negli anni ottanta) e il batterista Dan Weiss (spesso con David Binney).

Gli otto brani sono tutti a firma di Matt Panayides e dimostrano la sua dimestichezza con la scrittura armonicamente sofisticata del jazz moderno. Sono brani abbastanza simili fra di loro, capaci di materializzare scenari ben stratificati che consentono efficaci uscite solistiche ai quattro musicisti.

Ovviamente in questo la parte del leone se la dividono Matt Panayides e Rich Perry, capaci anche di dialogare e di sostenersi a vicenda. La sezione ritmica è sempre ben allineata con il suono profondo e legnoso del contrabbasso di LaSpina a fare da degno contrasto con la batteria secca e pulsante di Dan Weiss.
