Jim Robitaille Group: A View From Within
by Dan Bilawsky
Jim Robitaille Group's A View From Within is a statement of extension and growth, building on the magic of the unit's debut—To Music (Whaling City Sound, 2004). For that earlier release, the guitarist fronted a flexible quintet elevated by his own harmonic savvy and the presence of saxophonist Dave Liebman. Here, speaking both to continuity and ...
Dave Bass: No Boundaries
by Chris M. Slawecki
In 2015, Dave Bass retired from the Office of the Attorney General of California after twenty years of service and returned to his first professional love—playing the piano, a career that a wrist injury forced him to abandon about thirty years ago. No Boundaries is the third release, and second for Whaling City Sound, in Bass' ...
Eric Wyatt: The Golden Rule: for Sonny
by Rob Rosenblum
The Golden Rule: For Sonny sounds at times like a Sonny Rollins cover, especially on those tunes where Rollins' nephew and frequent sideman, trombonist Clifton Anderson, joins the front line, but a second listen shows that there is a lot more than slavish idolatry here. Wyatt is a talented young tenor player, whose admiration ...

La nicchia del canto jazz maschile
by Angelo Leonardi
Allan Harris e Fred Farell ...

Greg Abate & The Tim Ray Trio: Gratitude: Stage Door Live @ the Z
by Rob Rosenblum
If you are going to be a bebop purist, you have to resist the temptation to dress your music up to appeal to the masses. Greg Abate is one of those brave souls who worship at the altar of Charlie Parker, and depends on pure inspiration to capture his audience's attention. Gratitude: Stage Door ...
Gerry Gibbs Thrasher People: Our People
by Jack Bowers
Our People, the twelfth album as leader by multi-instrumentalist Gerry Gibbs, is difficult to describe and even harder to pigeonhole. Is it jazz? Not really. Is it world music? Sometimes. And sometimes even other-worldly. Stream of consciousness? Perhaps, but always with a specific plan in mind. Tone poems? Only in the sense that there are times ...

Release date: August 2, 2019 The saying goes that everyone's got a story to tell. But chances are good that few, if any, have the kind of story Dave Bass has. If somehow you haven't yet heard saxophonist Greg Abate (pronounced Uh-BAH-tay), now in his seventh decade and as sharp and eloquent an orator as ever, it is high time you did.
