Salena Jones

Born:

SALENA JONES (b. Joan Shaw) A direct descendant of Crazy Horse, the Indian Sioux warrior, Joan Shaw was born in Newport News, Virginia, and began singing in church and school before making her debut on life's bigger stages. As a very young teenager, Joan Shaw`s career began at Manhattan's legendary Harlem Apollo, when she won the amateur night singing "September Song". Joan grew up in New York in the company of musicians who would become the legends: Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Bud Powell, Wes Montgomery, Chico Hamilton and Stan Getz - she met all these people, jamming with some of them, and began making demonstration records for artists like Peggy Lee, Brenda Lee and Lena Horne, before getting her own recording contract. Based in New York, with her own "Blues Extra Orchestra", Salena toured widely across the US with "King" Curtis in her band (whom she named), also working with Johnnie Ray, Laverne Baker, Arthur Prysock, and Frankie Lyman. This rhythm`n`blues period was the forerunner to rock`n`roll and looking back, one sees how Joan Shaw is now revered by afficionados of those times. Joan then worked regularly at the famous venues of the Village Vanguard, Minton`s Playhouse and Wells Supper Club

About Peg Carrothers

Musician

Peg Carrothers

My musical background began forming as a young child, learning songs from the family for every season and occasion, and harmonizing out the window with my mother whenever a rainstorm was brewing. It wasn’t uncommon to find me outside on a windy day making up songs and singing them up high into the trees.

I was lucky to have a dedicated school music program in my formative years, which allowed me to explore my talents further with leading roles in choir and musical programs. My love for song led me to later pursue a music degree at St Catherine’s College and finish up at the University of Minnesota, studying in the classical opera tradition before vocal jazz was a developed curriculum.

About Paula West

Musician

Paula West

PAULA WEST was fueled by a determination to find the best music and communicate it in her own way. Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, she was initially exposed to classical music. "My parents didn't have a lot of jazz records," remembers Paula "My father linked to listen to classical music." Paula began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn while in college. After college, Paula moved to San Francisco, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Buying old records from thrift shops, she studied them and then began singing classes
