Joanna Pascale
Born:
Since emerging onto Philadelphia's jazz scene, vocalist Joanna Pascale has established herself as a compelling and skilled vocalist. At just 24 years old Joanna already has a working repertoire of over 400 songs. She brings a strong emotional element as well as a solid sense of swing to her uncommonly large catalogue of jazz standards. Joanna has regular gigs as a leader at some of Philadelphia's premiere jazz venues, as well as regular appearances with Philadelphia's most respected jazz musicians. Joanna began her musical education as a listener to the music in her household. "I grew up listening to old vinyl albums of Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, and Nat King Cole," recalls Pascale, "I learned these songs as if they were a part of my generation's popular music." Joanna's love for jazz voice eventually took her to Philadelphia's Performing Arts High School, and then to Temple University, where she studied music with such instructors as Terell Stafford and Bruce Barth. While still a student in high school, Joanna began to develop her unique repertoire. "When I started going to jam sessions, vocalists would always do the same couple of songs," stated Pascale, "it would amaze me that gems like 'Serenade in Blue' or 'Once in a While', for example, would fall through the cracks

About Marianne Solivan

Marianne Solivan
Born:
Quickly becoming one of the most buzzed about jazz singers on the New York scene, Marianne Solivan does not remember an “ah-ha” moment that brought her to the music she has devoted herself to: “I don’t recall having a big moment that made me like jazz. I just dug it.”
It is that same simplicity of statement with its intrinsic honesty that characterizes Solivan’s style. The infallible swing of Ella, the daring of Betty Carter, the matter-of factness of Carmen McRae…They can all be found in the voice of Marianne Solivan, whom trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has called “the modern-day paradigm to which all singers should aspire.”

Laura Welland
Born:
Not many women are mechanical engineers. Fewer still hold several patents. Few women play jazz trumpet; even fewer the double bass. Hardly anybody plays both. Not many women sell their own company to play jazz full time. Only one woman in fifty is a redhead. There's surely only one red-headed, patent-holding, engineer-pianist-trumpeter-bassist woman in town. And, she sings. Her name is Laura Welland, and if you've listened to jazz in Seattle in the last decade, you may have heard her playing bass-at Tula's, the Seattle Art Museum, or Benaroya Hall. She's played with Jay Thomas, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester, Dawn Clement and other Seattle jazz greats; she's studied under Chuck Deardorf, John Clayton and the late Ray Brown; on the side, received her music degree from Cornish College of the Arts

Natasha Miller
Born:
Once again, spunky vocalist Natasha Miller teams up with 83-year-old songwriter Bobby Sharp (Unchain My Heart, Don't Set Me Free), and this time, she’s got an album of destined- to-be jazz standards that outdoes everything she's produced to date. The new CD Don't Move features 11 songs written by Sharp, most of which have never been recorded before. That makes this album something of an historic event in its own right. What makes it a musical event of the first order is Sharp’s songwriting, Natasha’s gift for flawless phrasing, and stunning arrangements penned by a group of musicians whose roots go deep and whose talents run to the top of their class pianists Bill Bell (Duke Ellington, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson), Larry Dunlap (Cleo Lane, Mark Murphy), Ellen Hoffman (Oakland East Bay Symphony, Linda Ronstadt), and Josh Nelson (Peter Erskine, Ernie Watts)
