Pearl Bailey

Born: March 29, 1918

Never formally trained in music, Pearl Bailey credited her love of music to growing up in a "Holy Roller" evangelical church where her father was the minister. In her early career in amateur shows and nightclubs she developed her throaty style, embellished with asides and ad libs. Pearl Bailey sang with bands, later on stage and in films. The all-black version of Hello, Dolly! is one of her best-known roles; she played that role from 1967 to 1969 and in a later revival. Pearl Bailey was a frequent guest on television variety shows and had her own show on ABC in 1970-71. At age 67, Pearl Bailey graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in theology

James Brown

Harold Burrage

Born: March 30, 1931

An early singer and pianist in the Chicago blues tradition, Burrage was a well-known face on Chicago's west side R&B scene by his late teens. In 1950 he made his first recordings for Decca backed by Horace Henderson's septet, resulting in Claude Trenier's suggestive "Hi Yo Silver" which spawned several cover versions. He completed one-off sessions for Aladdin (1951) and States (1954) before hitting his stride between 1956 and 1958 with Cobra Records, under the tutelage of Willie Dixon,with whom he recorded in his own right in a soul-blues vein, as well as backing artists such as Magic Sam, Otis Rush and Ike Turner. He continued in the same style in his brief associations for Vee Jay Records, Paso and Foxy, but in 1962 he joined One-Derful's M-Pac subsidiary and over the following four years produced his prime work, including his only real hit, "Got To Find A Way", which reached number 31 in the August 1965 R&B charts. He died of a heart attack at the age of 35, at the home of his friend Tyrone Davis.

Monica Zetterlund

Monica Zetterlund (born Eva Monica Nilsson) was a Swedish jazz singer and actress. Through her lifetime, she starred in over 10 Swedish film productions and recorded over 20 studio albums. She gained international fame through her collaborative album with Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby.

Caterina Zapponi

In her career, the gifted multi-lingual vocalist Caterina Zapponi has explored music ranging from jazz and the American popular song to cabaret and musical theater. Zapponi was born and raised in Rome, the daughter of celebrated screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi, a collaborator and longtime friend of Federico Fellini. Her mother was a French born chanteuse and instilled in Caterina her love of the French repertoire. The film High Society helped introduce her to jazz while fueling a desire to move to the United States, which she did upon receiving a scholarship from Berklee College of Music. She graduated in two years and won the Berklee Cleo Laine Award for vocal achievement and performance. Caterina Zapponi was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and has since performed at prestigious venues including New York’s Birdland, and The Blue Note, and internationally at the Verbier and Saint Barthelemy festivals

Nora York

Nora York has performed and written her own music for theater, film, television, concert and cabaret. She has four CDs in release, been awarded two New York State Council on the Arts composers commissions and her work has been commissioned by The Public Theater in New York and The Brooklyn Academy of Music. She has performed at concert venues, universities and festivals throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Europe. (Ted, Newport Jazz Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz festival, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Hall and Lincoln Center Out of Doors.) She has been teaching at NYU since 1997.

Jimmy Witherspoon

Born: August 8, 1923

One of the great post-war blues shouters, Jimmy Witherspoon, or 'Spoon, as he's known throughout the jazz and blues world, straddled the line between blues and jazz, becoming an integral participant in the history of both of these classic genres of American music. Born August 8, 1923, in Gurdon, Arkansas, the young James Witherspoon sang in church choirs much like his railroad worker father. Confidence came early as he won first prize in a singing competition at the age of five. While in his teens, Witherspoon decided to try his luck pursuing a singing career and ran away to Los Angeles

Mark Winkler

Mark Winkler is a platinum award winning singer/lyricist who has had over 200 of his songs recorded and/or sung by such artists as Dianne Reeves, Randy Crawford, Liza Minnelli, Bob Dorough, Jackie Ryan, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Lea Di Lauria and Britain’s Claire Martin. He also has charted high on the Jazz Week charts with his last 4 vocal releases. He was also included as a 2014 ”Rising Star” Male Jazz Vocalist in Downbeat Magazine.

He will be releasing his new CD “Jazz and Other Four Letter Words in August 2015. After his last two recordings that were tributes to Laura Nyro and the musicians of the 50s West Coast Sound, this CD once again finds Mark mixing his own originals with songs by the likes of Paul Simon, Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough and Rodgers and Hart. He is once again joined on this recording by Cheryl Bentyne for two songs, the duo released the highly regarded ‘West Cost Cool” CD in 2013. For his new project, he has an all-star cast of musicians headed by John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Larry Koonse, Jamieson Trotter , Pat Kelley, Mike Shapiro, Dan Lutz and Bob Sheppard.
