Born: March 17, 1935

Growing up near Reading, Pennsylvania, Phillips ‘played piano by ear non-stop as a child’, later studying piano and voice. She attended Oberlin College, singing in her freshman year with the college big band. She had her own radio show, singing and playing on the college station, and sang with a college trio that was the supporting act on the occasion of Dave Brubeck’s famous Brubeck At Oberlin concert. After attending the New England Conservatory of Music, she relocated to New York City. Ottilie Patterson

Born: January 31, 1932

Ottilie Patterson is a blues singer best known for her performances and recordings with the Chris Barber Jazz Band in the late-1950s and early-1960s. The vocalist Patterson joined in 1954 the Chris Barber band when she was Barber's girlfriend, (they married in 1959). Aided by remarkably consistent personnel, the Barber band was soon one of the UK's leading traditional groups and was well placed to take advantage of the surge of interest in this form of jazz in the late 50s and early 60s. Barber experienced a "freak" hit in the pop charts in 1959 when his arrangement of Sydney Bechet's "Petite Fleur" became a huge hit (No. 3 in the UK).

Carol Kidd MBE Biography Carol Kidd is acknowledged in jazz circles as ‘Britain's finest ballads singer' Jazz Review. Ward Swingle

Born: September 21, 1927

Ward Swingle was the product of an unusually liberal musical education. In his hometown, Mobile, Alabama, he grew up with the sound of jazz and played in one of the great Big Bands before finishing High School. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Cincinnati Conservatory and studied piano with the celebrated Walter Gieseking in postwar France. In Paris in the sixties he was a founding member of the fabled Double Six of Paris, then took the scat singing idea and applied it to the works of Bach, hence The Swingle Singers, whose early recordings won five Grammies. When the Paris group disbanded in 1973, Ward Swingle moved to London and formed an English group, expanding the repertoire to include classical and avant-garde works along with the scat and jazz vocal arrangements
