Gary Bartz At 80: On Jazz Is Dead, Miles Davis And Why Improvisation Is A Dirty Word

Read "Gary Bartz At 80: On Jazz Is Dead, Miles Davis And Why Improvisation Is A Dirty Word" reviewed by Rob Garratt

It's hard to talk to Gary Bartz about music. Not because he's a difficult or reluctant interviewee—quite the opposite. In fact, the 80-year-old saxophonist is refreshingly unguarded and garrulous when looking back over his formidable six-decade musical career. It's just finding the right words that's the tricky part. Like many musicians, jazz isn't one ...

Bird at 100: Rudresh Mahanthappa, Joe Lovano, Vincent Herring and More

Read "Bird at 100: Rudresh Mahanthappa, Joe Lovano, Vincent Herring and More" reviewed by Russell Perry

Charlie Parker was born 100 years ago (August 29, 1920). Although he died at the age of 34 in 1955, his legacy is so powerful that jazz would have been very different without his contributions. In the intervening 65 years, Bird's music has continued to influence and inspire several generations of players and fans. In the ...

Harold Mabern: Mabern Plays Mabern

Read "Mabern Plays Mabern" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

A tad more subdued than the barn-burning The Iron Man: Live At Smoke (Smoke Sessions Records, 2019), Mabern Plays Mabern still manages to jump full throttle from where that defining recording left us, with a lush, lyrical intensity and a vital, legacy-culling energy which plays as an exquisite coda to the pianist's long, outstanding career.

In 2017, alto saxophonist and composer Camilla George's band was the support act for a Dee Dee Bridgewater gig at the London Jazz Festival.
