John T. "Bunky" deVecchis, 78, photographed jazz musicians
Bunky deVecchis would go into a dimly lit nightclub with a camera without a flash and capture jazz musicians in full cry in whatever light was available. He didn't like flash photography, and his subjects were appreciative. Nothing like working to nurse notes out of your instrument with a flash going off in your face. Ambient ...

by Ian Patterson
Listen To This: Miles Davis and Bitches Brew Victor Svorinich 202 Pages ISBN: 978-1-62846-194-7 The University Press of Mississippi 2015 Surprisingly, Victor Svorinich's book is the first dedicated exclusively to a study of Miles Davis's ground-breaking album Bitches Brew (Columbia, 1970). Surprising, because just about every facet of the ...
Rob Mazurek Exploding Star Orchestra: Galactic Parables: Volume 1
by AAJ Staff
Joe McPhee: Solos : The Lost Tapes (1980 – 1981 – 1984)
by Mark Corroto
The young cats (players thirty years his junior) know Joe. Players who have immersed themselves in free improvisation, like Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Peter Evans, Martin Kuchen, and Mikołaj Trzaska, learned the possibilities of creating a new music from, not thin air, but from listening. They model their approach after Joe McPhee. Born in ...

Fred Lonberg-Holm/Ken Vandermark: Resistance
by Mark Corroto
When you consider all the musicians that have recorded duos with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, it sounds kind of like the SPAM Monty Python sketch comedy piece. “Yes, I'll have some Fred Lonberg-Holm and Ken Vandermark." What, you don't want Fred Lonberg-Holm and Axel Dörner, or Fred Lonberg-Holm and Mats Gustafsson, or Fred Lonberg-Holm and Peter Brotzmann, ...

Myra Melford: Snowy Egret
by Glenn Astarita
Based on her multidimensional jazz schematics amid associations with like-minded artists nestled in the modern wave of jazz composers and improvisers, you wouldn't expect pianist, Myra Melford to compose works based on evening strolls in the park or mundane issues, for example. With her top-flight ensemble, Melford frames this plot on Eduardo Galeano's lucid and poetic ...
