One of Chicago’ brightest young trumpeters, Quentin Coaxum is one of our most thoughtful composers. He is inspired by great literary voices including James Baldwin, Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni, the civil rights movement and “the dynamics of human relationships in America’s current social climate.” His deeply moving song, “Alton Sterling,” honors the memory of the African American shot to death two years ago by white police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Coaxum, who grew up outside of St. Louis, is heavily influenced by the soulful post-bop styles of the late '50s and early '60s, but as evidenced on his well-received 2014 debut album, Current, his music has a contemporary edge.

Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, Michael began his musical life as a thirteen-year-old trumpeter. At that time, he saw his first REAL dancing marching band on television. It was the Grambling State Tiger Marching Band! "From that time on," says Michael, "I knew that I wanted to be in that band. I had never seen anything like that before." Geboren im Jahr 1975, aufgewachsen auf einem Bauernhof im Appenzellerland, begeisterte er sich schon früh für Musik und spielt seit seiner Jugendzeit Trompete (mit Adrian Eugster als inspirierendem Lehrer) - zuerst in einer Brassband und in einer groovigen Funkband zusammen mit Schulkollegen.

Mandla Mlangeni

Mandla Mlangeni is a Johannesburg-based trumpeter, composer and bandleader. A superbly talented player, Manda is a member of the SAMA-nominated group Amandla Freedom Ensemble and has toured extensively as a member of the Cape Town Opera. Recently, his musical production Oratorio For A Forgotten Youth was premiered by the Artscape Opera House. Mandla is also highly active with Tune Recreation committee, a group which he founded to teach music workshops and provide healing to disenfranchised communities. Outside of his performance and education work, Mandla curates Monday Blues at the Bassline and a host of other Johannesburg-based concerts under the presenting banner of Afrikan Freedom Principle.
