Ian Carey

Born: July 24, 1974

Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area–based jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator who “asks deep musical questions and comes up with compelling answers” (Bill Kirchner, editor, The Oxford Companion to Jazz).

His musical projects include the IAN CAREY QUINTET+1 (“a highly skilled band of improvisers” –DownBeat), which has been performing his original compositions for over a decade and has been featured on five albums including the 2020 release Fire in My Head; WOOD METAL PLASTIC, a 7-piece group which “combines the delicately calibrated dynamics of a chamber ensemble with alternating sections of close voicings and free improvisation” (Andrew Gilbert, Berkeleyside); TAKOYAKI 4, a pared-down, street-food–style organ/horns quartet which performs original music and jazz rarities; and DUOCRACY, a duo with pianist Ben Stolorow which explores rare American standards with intimacy and interplay.

Brian Chahley

Born: August 8, 1987

“This Way” is the newest album from young up-and-coming trumpeter Brian Chahley (20) from Toronto, Canada. After spending two years as a fellow at the prestigious Brubeck Institute (www.brubeckinstitute.org) in California playing alongside some of the world’s finest young talent and studying under some of the biggest names in jazz, Brian brought a mix of other Brubeck Fellows (past and present) to Toronto in January of 2007 to record this album. Featured on the album alongside Brian are Lucas Pino on tenor sax, Glenn Zaleski on piano, Chris Smith on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums. Colin has just begun a two year fellowship at the Monk Institute in New Orleans, while Lucas and Glenn recently continued their education at the New School in New York City

Sammy Lowe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel "Sammy" Lowe Sammy Lowe had his heart set on playing professional baseball but music became his favorite past time and his ticket to the music major league. One of Birmingham, Alabama's most prolific arrangers, Sammy was the chief arranger and composer for the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra for nearly 22 years. His list of monster hits with the band include, "Bearmash Blues," "Nona," "No Soap," "Midnight Stroll," "Bicycle Bounce" and "Raid the Joint." His arrangement of "I've Got a Right to Cry" for Birmingham vocalist Laura Washington soared on the national charts in 1946. Sammy's big band swing days included gigs with bandleaders Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder, Sammy Davis, Jr., Sy Oliver and Don Redman

Steve Wiest

Born: January 26, 1959

Steve has performed with: Dizzy Gillespie-who signed Steve's horn during a concert. Tito Puente, Fabian, Leslie Gore, Jock Bartley (Firefall), Fred Wesley (James Brown Band), Jim Salestrum (Dolly Parton's Band), Claire Fisher, Soloman Burk, Maggie Carlis (Cuba), Zephyr, Rombert Egues (former musical director for Arturo Sandoval), The Platters, The Coasters, Bernard Villa, and Nazara Perra. In concert, Steve has opened for: Fats Domino, Dr. John, Albert King, Jay Leno, Miami Sound Machine, Eberneser Oby (Nigeria), Coco Taylor, Otis Day and the Nights (Animal House Band), The Beach Boys, The Village People, and Little Richard. Chosen as an "Outstanding Soloist" at the Wichita Jazz Festival, Steve has also performed at: Red Rocks Amphitheater, Rainbow Music Hall, Boettcher Concert Hall, The Paramount Theatre, The Boulder Theatre, The Fox Theatre, The Bluebird Theatre, The Paradise (Aspen), and McNichols Sports Arena. Lew Soloff

Born: February 20, 1944

A consummate fixture on the New York jazz scene, Lew Soloff’s career is filled with a rich history of renowned sessions and world-class collaborations. From the time he eased into the east coast world of trend setting musicians in the mid 1960s, Soloff’s creative ventures have resulted in a respected body of work that places him in a category of true accomplishment and keeps his elegant and lyrical signatures in constant demand. Whether interpreting a standard or improvising on an original composition, his phrasing and note choices exemplify his unique voice. Soloff is known as a virtuoso with tremendous range and superior technical command, yet he exudes a wisdom for quietness and melody

Erskine Hawkins

Born: July 26, 1914

Jazz trumpeter, Erskine Hawkins, was born in Birmingham, Alabama July 26, 1914. A talented high-note trumpeter and a popular bandleader, Erskine Hawkins was nicknamed "The 20th Century Gabriel." He learned drums and trombone before switching to trumpet when he was 13, and was one of five inaugural inductees into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1978. He also became on of the principal influences on a young rhythm and blues piano player named Ray Charles. While attending the Alabama State Teachers College, he became the leader of the college band, the Bama State Collegians. They went to New York in 1934, became the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, started making records in 1936 and by 1938 were quite successful

Jon-Erik Kellso

Born: May 8, 1964

Trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso started playing professionally in and around Detroit, Michigan where he was born in 1964. Jon began early, playing in a big band at age 11, in the International Youth Symphony at age 13, and in a concert alongside cornetist Wild Bill Davison at age 17. Kellso played with a wide variety of groups there, including the J.C. Heard Orchestra. In '88 Jon-Erik joined James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band with whom he's made appearances throughout North America, concertized on PBS TV, and recorded extensively. Since moving to New York City in 1989 to join Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, Jon has enjoyed performing and recording with the likes of Ralph Sutton, Dan Barrett, Howard Alden, Marty Grosz, Milt Hinton, Bob Haggart, Dick Hyman, Linda Ronstadt, Leon Redbone, Levon Helm, Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Ken Peplowski, Bob Wilbur, and Kenny Davern. Recent engagements include a week at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis' Louis Armstrong Continuum; various appearances on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" live Public Radio International show, including a live cinecast to movie theaters everywhere with Elvis Costello; several jazz fest at sea cruises; concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C

Emiliano Torres

Born: October 22, 1980

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Emiliano Torres moved to miami at the age of 8 and has established himself in the music scene since High School playing with different local bands in Miami. Since then he has been recording and performing with artists such as Rabanes, Locos por Juana, Javier Garcia, La Ley, Control Machete, La Secta, Don Dinero, Johnny Dread, Oscar D' Leon, and Jorge Moreno. He's also appeared in the Maverick soundtrack 28 days till i'm famous writing the horn arrangements for the song "Just Be Me". Emiliano currently has his own project "Xperimento" in which he has performed at the Urban Latino Event and the Latin Funk Fest

Kevin G. Davy

Born: October 29, 1961

Kevin Davy (Trumpeter / Bandleader) Composer, Arranger Instruments: Trumpet, Flugel Horn, Keyboards, Percussion, Voice Biography: London-based, jazz improviser, band-leader, composer and trumpeter. Davy tends towards the modal approach to jazz and improvised music, citing influences such as: Hannibal Lokumbe, Lester Bowie, Don Cherry, Tomasz Stanko, Nils Molvaer Pederson, John Hassel, and others. He is best known for international touring and recording with Lamb, Adam F, Two Banks of Four,Lemn Sissay (Secret Society), as well as his own groups, KDQ and D'semble. According to styles and genres in Jazz and music generally, Davy has worked across a wide variety of styles, throughout Europe, with artists such as; Pibo Marquez(Venezuela), Sangoma Everett(USA/France), Shiek Tidiane Sek(Mali/France), Kresimir Debski(Poland), Roman Rahout(Poland) Paul Shigihara(Japan/Germany), and Doudou Gouirand(France) to name but a few
