Let It Be - Super Deluxe Special Edition

Read "Let It Be - Super Deluxe Special Edition" reviewed by Doug Collette

It's perfectly reasonable to state that the Beatles' Let It Be Super Deluxe Special Edition is the iconic group's third attempt to release music from their (three weeks of) January 1969 recordings. Originally set to be released as an album titled Get Back Don't Let Me Down and 12 Other Songs (as emblazoned on a contemporary ...

Musician

John Lennon

Born:

John Lennon was the Beatles' most committed rock & roller, their social conscience, and their slyest verbal wit. After the group's breakup, he and his second wife, Yoko Ono, carried on intertwined solo careers. Ono's early albums presaged the elastic, screechy vocal style of late- '70s new wavers like the B-52's and Lene Lovich. L7 and Babes in Toyland have also been influenced by and benefited from Ono's attitudinal, emotionally trailblazing work. Lennon strove to break taboos and to be ruthlessly, publicly honest. When he was murdered on December 8, 1980, he and Ono seemed on the verge of a new, more optimistic phase

Read "Springtime in New York 1980-1985: The Bootleg Series, Volume 16 (5CD)" reviewed by Doug Collette

Generally speaking, revelations abound within the various installments of The Bootleg Series, Bob Dylan's ongoing archive initiative, and Volume 16 is no exception. But in listening to Springtime in New York, 1980- 1985, the epiphanies come in slow bursts, flashing over the course of the five CDs to generate a cumulative momentum that reaches a flash-point ...

Sam Cooke: Legend

Read "Sam Cooke: Legend" reviewed by Doug Collette

Sam Cooke Legend Abkco 2021 With a running time of seventy minutes, the documentary on singer/composer/producer Sam Cooke is far shorter than the bonus material included on the DVD of Legend. Who Do You Think We Are?

Read "Who Do You Think We Are?" reviewed by John Kelman

Trying to find a distinct definition of what has come to be known as “The Canterbury Sound" is as elusive as attempting to describe what, in the jazz world, has become an overused epithet for the German ECM Records label and “The ECM Sound." Attempts to do so usually fail short because, rather than being actual ...

Dolby ATMOS: Now HEAR This

Read "Dolby ATMOS: Now HEAR This" reviewed by Jim Worsley

I almost entitled this “A Vacation For Your Ears." Seemed a bit wordy, although surely accurate. An invitation to Studio1LA from owners and masters of immersive engineering Karma Auger (yes he is Brian Auger's son) and Erich Gobel (pictured left to right, respectively) was accepted with high expectations. Auger, the drummer, and Gobel, the guitarist, bring ...

Read "A Different Drummer, Part 4: The Zildjian Legacy" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

They are the oldest family-owned business in the world, recognized globally by musicians from every genre. The Avedis Zildjian Company—known simply as Zildjian —traces its history to the ancient cymbals of the Middle East and Asia. Almost four hundred years ago, Avedis, an Armenian metalsmith and alchemist in seventeenth-century Istanbul, discovered an alloy of tin, copper, ...
