Tutto Monk: l'omaggio di Miles Okazaki
by Giuseppe Segala
Monk con la chitarra? Perché no. Si era posto la stessa sferica domanda Elliott Sharp pochi anni fa, registrando in solo con l'acustica l'album Sharp? Monk? Sharp! Monk! per l'etichetta Clean Feed. Si trattava di una scelta di cinque brani, elaborati con il criterio della lunga divagazione e riflessione geniale. Inoltre, il discorso era stato affrontato ...

This week we look at a great new book, “Playing Changes" by Nate Chinen. The program goes on highlighting artists featured in each chapter of this groundbreaking book ...
Poetry and Jazz: A Chronology
by Duncan Heining
My intention here is to offer a detailed but inevitably incomplete chronology of poetry and jazz. The focus is solely on the combination of the two art forms in performance, not on poetry about jazz or jazz musicians or poetry inspired by jazz but not performed to music. My definition of 'poetry' is fairly broad and ...

Before turning to the acoustic bass at age 14, he studied piano (with Howard Kasschau, who also taught Nelson Riddle) and trumpet. His otherwise miserable adolescence was brightened ...
Michael Gibbs With The Gary Burton Quartet: Festival 69
by Roger Farbey
On the first two discs of this previously unreleased three CD set, recorded at a single concert on 20th November 1969, the music is regularly punctuated by Gary Burton's announcement tracks, which are not always easily intelligible. However, his announcement preceding Steve Swallow's joyously rousing “Portsmouth Configurations" (actually “Portsmouth Figurations," from the 1967 RCA studio album ...
