Read "Karl Ackermann’s Best Releases of 2019" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

2019 was the year when one couldn't turn an ear without hearing a release that featured either Kris Davis or Matthew Shipp. Between the two pianist/composer/improvisers, listeners have been treated to more than a dozen recordings, each noteworthy. Then there is Satoko Fujii. On the heels of her 2018, twelve-album birthday celebration, the pianist issued another ...

Lucy O'Day and The Simon Latarche Trio: Honeymoon

Read "Honeymoon" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Pianist and composer Simon Latarche has been very active on the performance front but has not released new music since his self-produced Cornish Preludes, Book II (Pentreath Music, 2012). Cornish Preludes Book II continues the UK-based composer/pianist's scholastic pursuit of Claude Debussy's approach to impressionist composition. Combining his academic interest with the influences of Cornwall's colorful history and natural ...

Simon Latarche: Cornish Preludes

Read "Cornish Preludes" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Simon Latarche has produced an out of the ordinary set of jazz-based preludes, based on his own academic pursuits of Bach, Chopin and Debussy's approaches to the form. The resulting Cornish Preludes is a terrific collection from the UK-based composer/pianist/educator's Jazz Ensemble. Latarche's compositions are a near perfect combination of lyricism and improvisation, and the ensemble ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
