Laurenzi-Ernst-Green: Sightline

Read "Sightline" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

by Hrayr Attarian
December 24, 2013

Chicago based trio Laurenzi-Ernst-Green's debut Sightline is an atmospheric album filled with intriguing patterns and exuberant and elegant spontaneity. An intimate mysticism imbues this collaborative effort of seven original compositions with a modal bent. Bassist Katie Ernst's wordless vocals hauntingly echo saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi's big toned tenor on the mesmerizing “Skoops," while her resonant ...

December 20, 2013

The eternally clever, Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica Quartet led by vibraphonist, percussionist Brian O' Neil categorizes itself by travelling to a future moment where American music is as exotic as its past. Hence, a persuasive declaration as the band minces Eastern modalities with cool, jazz grooves and world music cadences. They also delve into the annals of ...

The Remote Viewers: Crimeways

Read "Crimeways" reviewed by Alex Franquelli

by Alex Franquelli
December 19, 2013

There is an almost indiscernible, cynical element in The Remote Viewers' music. It is probably hidden between the folds of its noir aesthetics, where contemporary fables of cops and thugs, the fuzz and hoodlums, seem to flourish in the dark corners of complex rhythmic patterns and atonalism. Or it is maybe the juxtaposition between the nocturnal, ...

Christian Pincock: Plentiful Excitement

Read "Plentiful Excitement" reviewed by Jack Bowers

by Jack Bowers
December 18, 2013

Here's an unusual combination: valve trombone, piano, drums and tuba (no bass). The leader, Christian Pincock, was until recently a teacher at the University of New Mexico and member of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, and Plentiful Excitement was recorded in Santa Fe shortly before he left New Mexico to explore greener pastures in the Great Northwest ...
