Craig Taborn: Daylight Ghosts

Read "Daylight Ghosts" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

In addition to his copious sideman work (including multiple recordings with James Carter, Roscoe Mitchell, Tim Berne, Michael Formanek, and Chris Potter, among many others) pianist/keyboardist Craig Taborn has found time to record intermittently as a leader since 1994's Craig Taborn Trio (IDW). This is his third ECM album, following the solo Avenging Angel (2011) and ...

Mats Gustafsson & Craig Taborn: Ljubljana

Read "Ljubljana" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Congratulations to whomever conceived of this pairing of two improvised music giants. Pianist Craig Taborn and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, both born in the great white north (so to speak), Taborn in Minneapolis and Gustafsson, Umeå, in Northern Sweden. Both are original and distinctive improvisers whose paths had never crossed until the 2015 Ljubljana Jazz Festival.

Pauline Oliveros, Roscoe Mitchell, John Tilbury, Wadada Leo Smith: Nessuno

Read "Nessuno" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Dave Soldier: The Eighth Hour Of Amduat

Read "The Eighth Hour Of Amduat" reviewed by Troy Dostert

The idea of crafting a classical/jazz opera from an ancient Egyptian funerary papyrus would probably be too much for most ordinary mortals to contemplate. But this kind of thing isn't at all unexpected for Dave Soldier, whose dedication to unusual and surprising projects has defined his long avocation in music. (His primary calling is as a ...

Matthew Shipp: Let's Do Lunch!

Read "Matthew Shipp: Let's Do Lunch!" reviewed by Yuko Otomo

When Matthew Shipp asked me to design the cover art for his Points album (Silkheart Records, 1992), I showed him works from the on-going drawing study I was engaged in. He picked one graphite drawing and said, “Wow! This is exactly what's happening inside my mind when I play the piano!" Here, we talk ...

Il meglio del 2016 secondo Luca Canini

Read "Il meglio del 2016 secondo Luca Canini" reviewed by Luca Canini

David S. Ware/Matthew Shipp: Live in Sant'Anna Arresi 2004

Read "Live in Sant'Anna Arresi 2004" reviewed by Mark Corroto

In every mystical film we see, like A Sea Of Trees and A Dog's Purpose or book we read--A Sudden Light by Garth Stein or Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, the departed find a way to communicate with the living. As humans, we desire this experience. Fortunately, music affords us this opportunity at just about ...

Pauline Oliveros & Connie Crothers: Live At the Stone

Read "Live At the Stone" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Connie Crothers passed away in August of 2016; an accomplished composer, improviser and pianist, she was not nearly as well-known as she should have been for someone whose talent attracted musical partnerships with Max Roach and Lennie Tristano. Despite playing everywhere from the downtown scene, to Carnegie Hall, to Europe's music halls, her refusal to run ...

Le Rex: Wild Man / Ingrid Laubrock: Ubatuba

Read "Le Rex: Wild Man / Ingrid Laubrock: Ubatuba" reviewed by Stefano Merighi
