Willie Pickens

Growing up in the midwest, Willie Pickens earned a teacher’s certificate from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee and went on to the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, in 1958, to receive his B.S. in Music Education, before beginning his remarkable career as a jazz pianist. Over the years, his sterling academic credentials have enabled him to share his gifts with many young players, both as a performer and teacher. Upon graduating from school, he moved to Chicago and began his career on a national hitrecord -- Eddie Harris' 1961 Exodus. After that big hit, Willie’s live appearances were almost all limited to the midwest for the next two decades, while his career as an educator flourished. From 1966 to 1986, he appeared on recordings headlined by Bunky Green, E

Pat Kelly

I am an eclecticly-minded Composer/Arranger/Pianist, who has practiced his art in the Cincinnati area and beyond for nearly 30 years. Primarily self- taught as a youth, I listened to rock music, played in a pretty good band starting at age 14 where I wrote many songs, and I learned jazz by frequenting jazz clubs and playing gigs with experienced musicians. I later attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where I graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Music degree. At CCM, I was awarded the Bertha Langhorst Werner Scholarship in composition. I was the original house pianist of the Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp Jazz Club upon its opening in 1979 and a member of the Jimmy McGary Quartet

This period included creating prepared piano's and tape experiments many years before he heard the music of John Cage or Brian Eno for the first time. Favorite music in the schoolgooing years was the early psychedelic music of Pink Floyd, The Beatles' White Album, free jazz, cool jazz, bebop, early Philip Glass minimal music and above all master pianists Keith Jarret and Jasper Van't Hoff.
