Matthew Fries

Born:

Matthew Fries is a joyful voice on the piano with a unique and recognizable style that is authentically rooted in the tradition of the classic jazz pianists, while still looking forward to the future of the music and the instrument.

As a composer and leader he has performed his own music extensively, recording ten albums of mostly original compositions. His music has been described as playful and hopeful, introspective, full of joy and wonderment, and awash with tonal colors. But it is his deeply swinging piano style and collaborative spirit that have also made him an in-demand sideman for both instrumentalists and vocalists. He has toured worldwide, appears on scores of recordings, and his work has been described as “the best jazz accompaniment I’ve seen in a cabaret in years” (The New York Times), and “the crispest rhythm section imaginable” (The London Times).

Chris Forbes

1.What brought you to music? I was interested in music pretty young according to my mother. She said I always seemed to gravitate towards the musical instrument toys at the expense of most of the others. My earliest musical memories revolve around the piano that we found in the parsonage at my Dad's third church posting. It was a South African made Steinway and I sat at it for hours playing clusters and the most dissonant things possible. I remember being really interested in the clash of overtones that low clusters made. I think that even then I had a real kinship with dissonant music. After about a year and a half my parents got me piano lessons

Hiromu Aoki

Born:

Aoki-san is originally from Osaka, Japan. He is one of Tokyo's most sought-after accompanists for vocalists. His sensitivity, timing, and rhythmic swing are hard to beat. Versatile, he plays original music, Jazz Standards, Blues, Japanese Music, all with his signature Jazz-Blues-Swinging style. I have worked with Aoki-san in Tokyo, for 20 years! As a pianist, he swings hard, is innovative; his musicality both supports and inspires fantastic performances, of all co-members of a gig. He is a long time friend and valued fellow musician. -Pamela MacCarthy
