by Glenn Astarita

John Hollenbeck has spent much of the past three decades blurring the boundaries between jazz, chamber music and improvisation. A Grammy-nominated composer and bandleader known for his work with the Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, he enters a new chapter with an electro-acoustic ensemble named after George Floyd. Its debut recording, Letters to ...

Columbia Icefield: A Silence Opens

by Troy Dostert
July 5, 2026

While grief is universal to the human experience, its specific manifestations can vary widely within each person who mourns. One of the challenges of the grieving process involves the difficulty of sharing exactly what one is feeling, and it can thus be an isolating experience--ironically, and painfully, at a time when human connection is most needed. ...

Adam O'Farrill: Elephant

by Glenn Astarita
April 16, 2026

On Elephant, trumpeter Adam O'Farrill steers his ensemble through music that is deliberate and quietly volatile. The album avoids easy dramatics, building tension through restraint. O'Farrill often ...

Musicians have been inspired by the visual arts for centuries, from Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, depicting the works of the artist Viktor Hartmann, to Myra Melford's 2025 release Splash (Intakt Records, 2025), a homage to the visual artist Cy Twombly. The question always arises: Does the listener have to know the artwork ...

I Dischi del 2025 secondo Ludovico Granvassu

by Ludovico Granvassu
January 5, 2026

by Ludovico Granvassu
January 3, 2026

Capturing the breathtaking beauty, range, and diversity of jazz released in 2025 through a list of “10 best albums" feels as challenging, vain--and ultimately disappointing--as trying to photograph the Grand Canyon at sunset by placing a pinhole in front of a rudimentary digital camera's lens. Sure, a picture will be taken. It might even prove you ...
