Rob Brown Trio: Live at Firehouse 12
by Jeff Stockton
Alto saxophonist Rob Brown has the lean physique and worried forehead of a typical free jazz improviser, but through his associations with the leading forces of the downtown scene (including Matthew Shipp and, most fruitfully, William Parker) he has positioned himself as an in-demand sideman as well as a creative and ear-catching leader. He has been ...
Michael Marcus: Lotus Symphony
by John Sharpe
Improvisers who concentrate on the clarinet are a select bunch, perhaps something to do with the difficulty of navigating its tricky three registers--a far cry from the early days of jazz when the clarinet's cry was integral to Dixieland and swing ensembles. Multi-instrumentalist Michael Marcus has only lately joined that coterie lost in the licorice stick's ...

Matthew Shipp: Cosmic Suite
by AAJ Italy Staff
Steve Swell: Rivers of Sound Ensemble: News from the Mystic Auricle
by John Sharpe
Steve Swell’s third release on the Polish NotTwo label moves the trombonist into new, though not entirely unfamiliar territory. On this occasion, his regular Slammin’ the Infinite band has expanded with the addition of trumpeter Roy Campbell to become the Rivers of Sound Ensemble. Hilliard Greene, who plays in Swell’s quartet with Gebhard Ullmann, takes over ...
Matthew Shipp: Cosmic Suite
by John Sharpe
A tangled web links the cast of Matthew Shipp’s latest recording on the adventurous NotTwo imprint. Saxophonist Daniel Carter features in Shipp’s Nubop Quartet and on his feted Strata (1997, HatHut) release, while Shipp has guested extensively with Other Dimensions In Music, one of Carter’s prime outlets. As a rhythm section, bassist Joe Morris and drummer ...
