Terrence McManus & John Hebert: Saints and Sinners
by Glenn Astarita
Here's an album that was recorded in 2010 and released in 2015. Hence, It's better late than never, especially since this duo production by rising star experimental guitarist Terrence McManus and all-universe jazz session bassist and leader, John Hebert tease our imaginations via these nine contrasting works. The duo's creative improvisational sparks and acute call and ...
Leila Bordreuil & Michael Foster: The Caustic Ballads
by Glenn Astarita
On the surface, the album title might be an oxymoron. None of these free-form works resemble traditional ballads, but the young Brooklyn-based duo's ideology and vision is clearly distinct and personalized via these jaunts that to some extent, parallel the British free jazz scene with acidic, creaky and scorching elaborations. There is a consortium of zany ...
Miles Ahead: A Powerhouse Film, But is it the Truth?
by Victor L. Schermer
Don Cheadle Miles Ahead Sony Pictures Classics 2015 Miles Davis happens to have been actor Don Cheadle's long-time hero, and he mulled over the idea of a film about him for several years. In contemplating his directorial and screenwriting debut based on Davis' life, Cheadle could have chosen among several formats: ...
Eugenia Choe: Magic Light
by Dan McClenaghan
It takes nerve to come from (seemingly) out of nowhere to present a piano trio disc. The history runs deep there: Bud Powell, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett--just a scratching of the surface of the bop and post bebop players in the game. Eugenia Choe, a new-to-the-scene New York-based ...
Rolf Sturm: Young
by C. Michael Bailey
Guitarist Rolf Sturm has found himself on two recent and exceptional recordings: Roswell Rudd and Heather Masse's August Love Song (Red House, 2016) and Jenna Mammina & Rolf Strum's Spark. He is a guitarist of expansive facility and a sense of humor, to boot. Take his present Young as an example. The release began conceptual life ...
Moppa Elliott: Still, Up In The Air
by Luca Canini

New Zion w/ Cyro Baptista: Sunshine Seas
by Mark Corroto
The third release by Jamie Saft's New Zion Trio expands the concepts he launched with his previous efforts, Fight Against Babylon (Veal Records, 2011), and Chaliwa (Veal Records, 2013). His reggae/dub-meets-piano trio explorations expand with the inclusion of Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista. This rhythm trance music casts a much larger net, one of universal spirituality, beyond physical matter ...
Ben Monder: Amorphae
by Mario Calvitti
