Wadada Leo Smith: Red Hill
by John Sharpe
A first time meeting in the studio pitches avant-garde trumpet master Wadada Leo Smith against a crew of improvisers who cover diverse bases. All three of Smith's collaborators work together in Slobber Pup, what you might term a thinking man's noise band, as well as overlapping in a range of other outfits including Metallic Taste of ...

The Gil Evans Project's new live album, Lines of Color has won Jazz Magazine's CHOC award and been receiving reviews from jazz publications around the world. See what people are saying about “Lines of Color". “The gorgeous lilt of Evans' still startling original arrangements for horns is preserved, not in the aspic of academia but in ...
Duke Ellington And His Orchestra: The Treasury Shows, Volume 19
by Chris Mosey
In 1946 the uneasy truce between industry and organized labor in the U.S.A which had persisted for the duration of World War Two came to an abrupt end. Coal miners and railroad workers came out on strike and jazz bands were banned by the American Federation of Musicians under its autocratic boss James C. Petrillo from ...
Marilyn Crispell -- Gerry Hemingway: Table Of Changes
by Glenn Astarita
These distinguished artists performed together with pioneering saxophonist, composer Anthony Braxton's epic 80s ensembles amid other ensuing collaborations. Over time, drummer Gerry Hemingway and pianist Marilyn Crispell have gravitated towards the upper echelon of the so-called 'new jazz' outlook, as Table of Changes provides a glowing snapshot of their Europe 2013 tour. Moreover, the album extends ...
Ted Daniel's Energy Module: Innerconnection
by Vincenzo Roggero

Mike Parker’s Unified Theory: Embrace The Wild
by Glenn Astarita
For an all-acoustic jazz unit this band transmits an electrifying presence. New York reared bassist, composer Mike Parker's residence in Poland is a fruitful one, evidenced by the quality of musicianship he garners for this set that integrates manifold genres into the jazz vernacular. Along with little big band type horns charts and other variables, the ...
Oliver Lake, William Parker: To Roy
by Stefano Merighi
