Julie Christensen

Born:
Versatility has never been a problem or a pose for singer JulieChristensen, whose voicefound a home in the L.A. post-punk band Divine Horsemenand, for years, as a spotlightedsinger with Leonard Cohen. With Something Familiar, her thirdCD, she adds another genrefeather to the cap: jazz. Singing standards, and in her ownsignature style, is actuallynothing new for the vocalist. In her sundry travels, geographically and musically, she hasdipped into the Great American Songbook for years, from hernative Iowa to years spent inAustin and Los Angeles, and onto her current life, based inOjai, California. SomethingFamiliar is more than a standards festival. The album title itselfis taken from a fascinatingJimmy Webb-penned rarity, “Just Like Marilyn,” There is alsothe original “Hard to Love,”and a gritty-bluesy workout, “Today I Sing the Blues.” Withher keyboardist and longtimecreative cohort Karen Hammack, Christensen tracked inBrooklyn with noted jazzdrummers Jeff Ballard and Kenny Wollesen, alongsidebassists Mary Ann McSweeney andDon Falzone. Back on the west coast, trumpeter Jeff Elliottand pedal steel guitarist-of-note Greg Liesz added their spices to the mix. The end resultis a fresh twist on oldmusical values, something familiar yet also otherwise.

by Dave Wayne
Funny how groups come together. The Kodama Trio, resident in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is comprised of three individuals from completely different backgrounds and completely different parts of the country. Pianist Robert Muller, originally from Portland, OR, has spent time in New York City and Copenhagen. A former student of Andrew Hill at Portland State University, ...
Octaveleven: This Hyperlink

by Dave Wayne
Hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico, the all-instrumental keys-- bass--drums trio Octaveleven presents a dynamic blend of old-school progressive rock, math-rock, metal, fusion, and electronica on their debut EP, This Hyperlink. The result is highly appealing; catchy and tuneful in ways that one doesn't normally associate with progressive rock of any sort. Drummer Ben Durfee and ...
Pray For Brain: None Of The Above

by Glenn Astarita
New Mexico is known for its picturesque landscape, arts & crafts and Mother Earth type activities, but not cited for harvesting diverse progressive rock power trios. In addition, the band's marketing pitch asks, What happens when two Buddhists and a Muslim meet to make music?" Evidently, a whole lot is going on, as the musicians' incorporate ...
