Jonas Kullhammar: Son of a Drummer
by Clifford Allen
Over the past several years, jazz fans have been quite lucky to hear a significant amount of new work from Scandinavian improvisers. However, most of the Scandinavian improvisers who have cracked the international jazz scene are committed to free improvisation. Those who embrace more traditional roots, while still dedicated to pushing at the boundaries of those ...
Lina Nyberg: Tellus
by Eyal Hareuveni
Swedish vocalist Lina Nyberg, like other Scandinavian jazz singers such as Jeanette Lindström, Solveig Slettahjell and Torun Eriksen, brings a rare quality to the music that has become harder to find on the other side of the Atlantic: sensual maturity, candidness, and an admirable insistence not to comply with market rules which tend to target conservative ...
Kristian Harborg Quartet: Harbostatic
by Jack Bowers
It's hard to get a firm grip on this album. On the one hand, Swedish tenor saxophonist Kristian Harborg is a highly competent player from the Michael Brecker/Josh Redman/Chris Potter school of contemporary thought (with a hint of Sonny Rollins adding spice). On the other, Harbostatic, recorded live at the Glenn Miller Café, presumably in Stockholm, ...
Alberto Pinton Quintet: Motionemotion
by AAJ Italy Staff
Alberto Pinton Quintet: Motionemotion
by Glenn Astarita
You won't find a whole lot of schmaltz or sugar-coated themes in Italian multi-reedman Alberto Pinton's music. Recently a resident of Sweden, the artist once again pursues fire and brimstone with his latest quintet effort, which is packed with ominous intentions. Pinton and his crew display the utmost fortitude here. And whether he's performing on baritone ...

Jonas Kullhammar: Snake City North
by Michael McCaw
There is nothing quite like the muscular sound of a big band that is busting at the seams with energy while disposing of the all-too-common brassy clichés of big band recordings. Fronted by tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar and his quartet with pianist Torbjörn Gulz, acoustic bassist Torbjörn Zetterberg, and drummer Jonas Holgersson, the Norrbotten Big Band ...
