Dave Liebman: Earth

by Mike Jurkovic

Alongside Pat Metheny,Billy Hart, and Cecil McBee, Water: Giver of Life (Arkadia Jazz, 1997) birthed the the long journey. Teaming with violinist/sound engineer Walter Quintus for 2006's Air (Finetunes) led to 2016's free-jazz flame torch with Dave Holland, ...

Dave Liebman: Archives and Improvisations - The Past and the Now of a Life in Jazz

by Victor L. Schermer
Prolific saxophonist, composer, band leader, and educator Dave Liebman is a living legend, an NEA Jazz Master who has been making waves since the 1970s and never stops growing, learning, and discovering. His autobiography, What It Is (Scarecrow Press, 2012, with Lewis Porter) is an honest probing of his more than half century experience as a ...
Hyeseon Hong: EE-YA-GI (Stories)

by Troy Dostert
With her rich, engaging debut release, EE-YA-GI (Stories), composer Hyeseon Hong brings her own unique approach to contemporary jazz. Using a first-rate large ensemble to showcase her compositions, she takes traditional folk forms, particularly from her native Korea, and develops them with modern big-band jazz voicings. The result is an eminently listenable and enjoyable recording, one ...
Dave Liebman Group: Expansions Live

by Alberto Bazzurro

by Budd Kopman
For those that know soprano saxophonist David Liebman's latest group Expansions from their first two studio albums, Samsara and The Puzzle, the double CD Expansions Live will be the lodestone for this quintet (Liebman, reedman Matt Vashlishan, keyboardist Bobby Avey, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Alex Ritz). Playing a few of the tunes from ...
Dave Liebman Group: Expansions - The Puzzle

by Neri Pollastri
Dave Liebman: Expansions: The Puzzle

by Budd Kopman
The Puzzle is the terrfic follow-up recording by David Liebman's new group, Expansions, the first being Samsara. No sophomore jinx here; if anything, the group has coalesced further and is even tighter. To throw out a (perhaps meaningless) label, this music could be called hyper-bop in its mix of well-placed dissonance, rhythmic displacements and ...
