Dave Liebman Group: Expansions - The Puzzle
Quattro di queste sono infatti di Liebman, due dell'ancista Matt Vashlishan, due di Marino e una del pianista Bobby Avey, a cui si aggiungono un classico, "Good Bait" di Dameron e Basie, e un brano di Messiaen, il conclusivo "Danse de la fureur," entrambi arrangiati da Liebman. La varietà non inficia però l'unità stilistica, che è quella di un jazz moderno relativamente convenzionale, e tuttavia caratterizzato in modo personale da un lato dalla frammentarietà ritmica che caratterizza parte delle produzioni di Liebman e che può essere apprezzata esemplarmente in "Off and Off," dall'altro per la tipica espressività del sassofonista, specie al soprano (con il quale interpreta gran parte dei brani), che lo rende pressoché unico.
I suoi accompagnatori mostrano tutti grande qualità, ma soprattutto sono perfettamente sinergici alla sua musica, che unisce ritmicità e cambi dinamici, complessità negli intrecci delle voci e linee melodiche comunque tangibili. Così, se basso e batteria funzionano come metronomi, il pianista e soprattutto Vashlishian compongono con Liebman le pregevoli tessiture che, assieme all'impatto spesso drammatico dei cambi dinamici e ritmici, costituisce il nucleo forte della poetica della formazione.
In un lavoro compatto e costante anche quanto a qualità dei brani, spicca "Continues to Ignore," di Avey, nel quale Liebman è a lungo impegnato al flauto di legno e che è ispirato musicalmente da Haiti e politicamente dall'indifferenza degli USA per il drammatico stato in cui versa il piccolo stato centroamericano.
