Marcelo Dos Reis: Points

by John Sharpe
December 31, 2019

Points unites four partners in crime, who may be familiar from excellent albums such as Chamber 4 (FMR, 2015) and For Sale (Clean Feed, 2015). But though there are many interconnections between the Portuguese threesome of guitarist Marcelo dos Reis, drummer Marco Franco and trumpeter Luis Vicente, and French cellist Valentin Ceccaldi, this is their first ...

Luis Vicente - Vasco Trilla: A Brighter Side Of Darkness

by John Sharpe
December 23, 2019

The drone plays an important role in musics around the world, from south Indian classical to the pibroch piping of Scotland and the didgeridoo of Australia, to name just a few examples. Such minimalist leanings where small modulations in clusters of pure tone become the main feature also appear especially suited to experimental trumpeters such as ...

John Dikeman And The Origin Of The Species

by Mark Corroto
June 28, 2019

If we were to go searching for saxophonist John Dikeman's spirit animal, we might have to bypass beast for sapien. Let's just say his spirit animal is the father of punk, Iggy Pop. Those expectations are more than met by the Frame Trio on Luminária, the first album by the collective of trumpeter Luís ...

Chamber 4: City Of Light

by John Sharpe
December 22, 2017

City of Light is the follow up to the excellent eponymous debut by Chamber 4 (FMR, 2015) and presents an unchanged line up. It's also a close relative of For Sale (Clean Feed, 2015), which features three of the same players. Given those connections it shouldn't be a surprise that this live recording from a concert ...

Troy Dostert's Best Releases of 2017

by Troy Dostert
December 16, 2017

Looking over the vast quantity of fine music released in 2017, it is reassuring to know that even in these troubled times, the spirit of creativity and endurance that jazz has always embodied continues to hold strong, especially as the music continually finds new forms of expression that move beyond stylistic boundaries. It was a particularly ...
