Born:
Paulo R. is an independent artist born in Lisbon in 1975. He first came into contact with the piano at age 7, within the realm of classical music. Since then, Paulo went on to experience other instruments and musical genres. As a teenager he played mostly drums in punk-rock bands. His interest in drumming led him at age 16 to enrol in the Hot Club Portugal School (International Association of Schools of Jazz). A detour into visual arts and design followed, which led Paulo R. to his parallel activity as a graphic designer. He later returned to the Hot Club School, completing the jazz course as a pianist

José Salgueiro

Born:
José Salgueiro got some notability as a percussionist in the Portuguese Popular Music scene. He is percussionist and drummer of projects like Trovante, Resistência, Lokomotiv by Carlos Barretto and El Fad by José Peixoto. José Salgueiro having played with famous national musicians, namely Sérgio Godinho, José Mário Branco, Rui Veloso , Zeca Afonso, Pedro Burmester and Camané. He performed several times abroad, together with Gaiteiros de Lisboa, Bernardo Sassetti, Carlos Barretto, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Paulo Ribeiro, António Pinho Vargas, Perico Sumbeat, Carlos Martins, Carlos Bica, José Peixoto, Carlos Zíngaro e de Maria João & Mário Laginha. After studying Improvisation Theory (drums and trumpet) at “Tallers de Musics” in Barcelona, he would attend some training programmes with distinguished drummers, such as Max Roach, Billy Hart, Ron Maclure, David Liebman, Richard Beiracha and Paulo Motian. He joined the Wayne Shorter’s Quintet, in a concert at Coliseu do Porto (Oporto Coliseum), included in “Porto 2001” jazz program

A new phase of my life began in the fall of 2003 when I accepted an invitation to become the Professor of Drum Set studies at the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo (ESMAE) in Porto, Portugal. Confident that I would contribute to the musical life of Portugal, I left NYC knowing that it was important for me to find a group of musicians who want to share their musical ideas and play the music I love to play. Thus, my All Star band was created. As a result of this collaboration between many of Portugal’s finest jazz musicians/composers and myself, this album, “Once Upon A Time in Portugal,” was realized. When thinking about how I wanted to make this recording, I decided to do it the old fashioned New York way
