MUSICIAN Born:

Linley Marthe

From the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, Linley Marthe is considered by some as the world’s foremost jazz bassist. That's quite a claim. But here is what someone who certainly knew about bass players had to say: “Linley is just a phenomenon. I don’t know if there is anybody who can touch him in terms of overall bass playing.” (Joe Zawinul interview www.zawinulonline.org) Linley played with The Joe Zawinul Syndicate during the last several years before Zawinul died. Other top artists Linley has worked with include Cheb Mami, Dave Liebman, Nguyen Le, Trilok Gurtu, Jean Luc Ponty, Paco Séry and Randy Brecker

Read "An Urban Myth: Chris Potter Circuits Quartet feat. Craig Taborn at Porto's Casa da Música" reviewed by Arian Bagheri Pour Fallah

Circuits the Record, Circuits the Quartet. The record Circuits (Edition, 2019) makes use of production as a means to architecturally bring to bay today's average, one may say alienated jazz listener, the “grooveland" referenced by Potter merely an excuse and hardly the verdict in this trial. It is a covered walk 'round new-fashioned, urban currents—skintight, ...

Chris Potter: Circuits

Read "Circuits" reviewed by Roger Farbey

Circuits is, stylistically, relatively far removed from Chris Potter's previous album, The Dreamer Is The Dream (ECM, 2017) but is certainly no less attractive. Whilst the earlier album is, generally, more sedate (with some exceptions), this record is full of heterogeneous, unanticipated delights and handbrake rhythm turns. That said, the short-ish opener, “Invocation," with Potter on ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
