John Lee Hooker

Born:
The Boogie Man Born near Clarksdale, Mississippi to a sharecropping family, John Lee Hooker's earliest musical influence came from his stepfather, Will Moore. By the early 1940's Hooker had moved north to Detroit by way of Memphis and Cincinnati. Hooker found work as a janitor in the auto factories, and at night, like many other transplants from the rural Delta, he entertained friends and neighbors by playing at "house parties". He was "discovered" by record storeowner Elmer Barbee who took him to Bernard Besman, who was a producer, record distributor and owner of Sensation Records, Besman leased some of his early Hooker recordings to Modern Records

Van Morrison: The Healing Game (Deluxe Edition)

by Doug Collette
As enigmatic as Van Morrison is, the archiving of his vault reveals some logic with the reissue of The Healing Game in expanded form. Following on the heels of It's Too Late to Stop Now... Volumes II, III, IV (Legacy Recordings, 2016) and The Authorized Bang Collection (Legacy Recordings, 2017), this three-CD package of one of ...
Jazz & Soundtracks

by Ludovico Granvassu
Jazz has had a very close relationship with cinema and TV. To be perfectly frank in this relationship cinema and TV have not as generous as jazz has been towards cinema. Jazz has been only sporadically covered by quality movies. When that has happened the quantity of stereotypies and clichés about jazz spoiled them ...
Tony Joe White: Bad Mouthin'

by Chris M. Slawecki
You might not recognize Tony Joe White by name but chances are you recognize his songs. A musical lone wolf born and raised on a Louisiana cotton farm about twenty miles from the nearest town (Oak Grove), White's unique blend of country funk and blues proved fertile for soulful singers from Elvis Presley ("Poke ...
Tony Joe White: Bad Mouthin'

by Doug Collette
If Tony Joe White's seventeenth album, Bad Mouthin', proves anything, it's how deeply evocative of his Southern heritage are his own songs, even as they stand next to--and sound of a piece with--those of Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and Charlie Patton. Appropriately, virtually all twelve tracks on this LP find the author of ...
Leonardo Pavkovic: Nothing is Ordinary

by Chris M. Slawecki
More than any other person, Leonardo Pavkovic has made me write some crazy shit. Pavkovic is the primal force behind the joyously eclectic MoonJune Records, which he established in 2001. Established" may not be the right word: I am truly an unusual and rules breaking call-it-record-company with a 'label' identity despite the fact that ...
John Mayall: In The Pocket at 84

by Jim Worsley
For the past five and a half decades, John Mayall has written scores of both relevant and joyous music. It should come as no surprise that at the tender age of 84 he continues to do so. It soothingly, and ingeniously seems to flow out of him like a calm, yet telling, river. Many ...
