Vic Juris: Tension and Release

Read "Vic Juris: Tension and Release" reviewed by Victor L. Schermer

This article was first published at All About Jazz on July 28, 2009. Vic Juris is one of the premier jazz guitarists in the business today. Perhaps less known than some of his peers, he is nevertheless admired by all of them and has accumulated, since his emergence on the scene in the 1970s, ...

David Finck: Bassically Jazz

Read "Bassically Jazz" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

It's hardly news that David Finck is an eloquent, inventive, and swinging bassist, with a long line of illustrious projects and collaborators. Finck has been on hundreds of top recordings and stages, performing with everyone from Rosemary Clooney to Ivan Lins and George Michael, and was the favorite bassist of the great Andre Previn. While Finck ...

Ten Artists: May 2019

Read "Ten Artists: May 2019" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Paul JostSimple LifePaul Jost Music2019 I believe there are precious few exceptional male jazz vocalists. There. I said it. Female vocalists? They are legion. But once one has pruned away the vanity projects, the Sinatra wannabes, and the most recent unforgivable cover of “My Funny Valentine," there remain few. Paul Jost ...

Joanna Pascale at Chris' Jazz Cafe

Read "Joanna Pascale at Chris' Jazz Cafe" reviewed by Victor L. Schermer

Joanna Pascale Chris' Jazz Cafe Philadelphia, PA November 10, 2018 The content of this show came as a complete surprise to this reviewer. Read "Subtle Disguise" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Have we been dealing with two different Joe Lockes for all these years? To some, the vibraphonist presents as a technically adept and intellectually curious seeker, constantly pushing through to new levels of possibility and commitment with his music. But for others, Locke is a conduit to understanding the human condition. This is a dichotomy that ...

On Stage at JALC: Paul Jost

Read "On Stage at JALC: Paul Jost" reviewed by Suzanne Lorge

Paul Jost had already enjoyed a successful, decades-long career as a drummer, sideman, and leader when he decided to work solely as a jazz vocalist. Switching from player to vocalist mid-course is not a typical career path for a musician. But Jost's quick rise as a singer over the last six years--he sang at Dizzy's Club ...

Michelle Lordi Trio Friday Nights Philadelphia Museum of Art June 8, 2018 I've always appreciated Michelle Lordi's singing through her fine recordings, but I'd never heard her in person, so I seized this opportunity to hop over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to catch her show, ...

Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra: Without A Trace

Read "Without A Trace" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Grudging good wishes to New Yorkers who are able to see and hear the world-class Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra on a fairly regular basis. Everyone else must make do with the occasional recording (Without a Trace is only the second by the ten-year-old ensemble which made its debut in 2008). That's not nearly enough, of course, ...
