Marta Warelis / Frank Rosaly / Aaron Lumley / John Dikeman: Sunday At De Ruimte

Read "Sunday At De Ruimte" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Is it a pilgrimage or just magnetism that draws improvising artists to Amsterdam? If you've read Kevin Whitehead's book New Dutch Swing (Billboard Books, 1998), you'll understand the open atmosphere and creative jazz scene which began there in the 1960s. It was a scene sown by America's New Thing in free jazz, but also one that ...

Bart Maris & Jasper Stadhouders Parazzar Bruges, Belgium July 17, 2020 The Dutch-speaking Flemish north of Belgium has its own scene, even though crossing over to a great degree with the central Brussels hub. In quaintly historic Bruges, the Parazzar bar/restaurant is a well-established joint with a pronounced ...

Made To Break: F4 Fake

Read "F4 Fake" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If you count their three download-only releases from 2016, F4 Fake by Ken Vandermark's Made To Break is the band's ninth release since forming in 2011. This is significant because like his quintet Vandermark 5, which existed from 1996 until 2010, this quartet and his ensemble Marker are the main drivers for the trailblazing composer. Not ...

John Dikeman And The Origin Of The Species

Read "John Dikeman And The Origin Of The Species" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If we were to go searching for saxophonist John Dikeman's spirit animal, we might have to bypass beast for sapien. Let's just say his spirit animal is the father of punk, Iggy Pop. Like early music by The Stooges, Dikeman's sound makes reference to the music of both Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. It's a shame ...

Dave Rempis, Jasper Stadhouders, Frank Rosaly: Icoci

Read "Icoci" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Dave Rempis: Icoci

Read "Icoci" reviewed by John Sharpe

In avant jazz, as in other artistic endeavors, talent alone isn't enough. Success requires a large slice of luck too. Chicago-based reedman Dave Rempis knows that as well as anyone. As a consequence he works hard at making his own luck: he concentrates on running a string of regular outfits; assembles a network of supportive venues; ...
