Astral Spirits: Lifting the Spirit of Jazz

by Jakob Baekgaard
November 4, 2019

While pop often follows predictable musical patterns, one of the greatest qualities about jazz is its sense of adventurousness and the ability to take the listener on a journey where the destination is unknown. The Astral Spirits label, based in Austin, Texas, and run by musician Nate Cross, truly embraces this quality of jazz.

Chris Pitsiokos: Silver Bullet in the Autumn of Your Years

by Don Phipps
February 27, 2019

Adventurous, hair-raising, mind-bending, dense, fibrous, layered, hallucinogenic, twisted. These are the words that come to mind when listening to the excellent but challenging music on Chris Pitsiokos's album Silver Bullet in the Autumn of Your Years. Pitsiokos' compositions often sound like a musical transcription of the trippiest parts of William Burrough's “Naked Lunch." The result? An ...

Lucia Cadotsch: Speak Low

by Niccolò Lucarelli
February 14, 2018

Jason Ajemian: Folklords

by AAJ Staff
October 27, 2014
