Joe DeRose and Amici: Peace Streets

Read "Peace Streets" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Drummer Joe DeRose and guitarist Hristo Vitchev seem to be attached at the hip. DeRose was an important presence on Vitchev's Songs For Messambria (First Orbit Sounds, 2009) and The Perperikon Suite (First Orbit Sounds, 2011), and the guitarist is a fixture in this band. Bassist Dan Robbins also appears with both leaders, raising the odds ...

The Acoustic and the Electric: Hristo Vitchev and Joe DeRose

Read "The Acoustic and the Electric: Hristo Vitchev and Joe DeRose" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Bay area guitarist Hristo Vitchev is a prolific and consummate musician. Capable of both deeply introspective lyricism and electrifyingly gregarious fervor, Vitchev, nevertheless, maintains his individuality and hi, easily recognizable, impressionistic style in all of his diverse engagements. Two records released in 2013 superbly showcase his adroitness in and adaptability to various musical situations.

Notable & Nearly Missed in 2013

Read "Notable & Nearly Missed in 2013" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

More music is released each year than can be realistically followed by a given writer. I typically listen to much more music than I write about, not because this music is not worthy somehow but there is so little time. So, this year, I am going to write a “Notable & Nearly Missed" column to catch ...

Hristo Vitchev and Liubomir Krastev: Rhodopa

Read "Rhodopa" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

Such is the example of this unique and very exquisite recording. With Rhodopa, Bay Area guitarist/composer Hristo Vitchev and clarinetist Liubomir Krastev meld musical minds, dive exuberantly ...
