Storie (minime) di chitarra
by Alberto Bazzurro
Open Jazz Festival 2015
by Alberto Bazzurro
Eric Hofbauer Quintet: Prehistoric Jazz – Volumes 1 & 2
by Mark F. Turner
With sure workmanship and untamed inquisitiveness, Boston-based guitarist Eric Hofbauer is no stranger to confronting unusual yet stimulating music. Examples include 2008's uncharacteristic guitar duo The Lady of Khartoum with Garrison Fewell or the striking American solo series--American Vanity (2004), American Fear (2010) and American Grace (2013)--which crossed distinctive terrains of improvisation and covers of iconic ...
Eric Hofbauer Quintet: Prehistoric Jazz – Volumes 1 & 2
by Alberto Bazzurro
Variable Density Sound Orchestra: Evolving Strategies
by John Sharpe
The constituent parts of guitarist Garrison Fewell's Variable Density Sound Orchestra shifted gradually between its eponymous inception (Creative Nation, 2008) and sophomore effort on Sound Particle 47 (Creative Nation, 2010). Inevitably there will be further changes in the future if the unit continues, as both trumpeter Roy Campbell and reedman John Tchicai have passed on since ...
Per voce e dirimpettaio
by Alberto Bazzurro
Andreas Schaerer, Lucas Niggli

Jazz Musician of the Day: Garrison Fewell
All About Jazz is celebrating Garrison Fewell's birthday today! “The guitarist formerly known as one of Boston\'s most eloquent inside players has become one of its leading experimenters," writes Boston Phoenix\'s Jon Garelick, who included Fewell\'s ensemble, the Variable Density Sound Orchestra, on his best of 2009 list. Fewell, a professor at Berklee College since 1977, ...
Tchicai - Kohlhase - Fewell - McBee - Hart: Tribal Ghost
by John Sharpe
Of all the collaborations in the later years of legendary reedman John Tchicai, some of the most fertile were in the company of guitarist Garrison Fewell, whether under the Dane's leadership like One Long Minute (NuBop, 2012) and Big Chief Dreaming (Soul Note, 2005) or in undocumented appearances with the guitarist's Variable Density Sound Orchestra. Joining ...
