Eric Hofbauer Quintet: Prehistoric Jazz – Volumes 1 & 2
Diciamo subito che i risultati sono particolarmente significativi, specie per quanto riguarda Stravinskij. Regna un bel clima da third stream, però con la chiara percezione di quanto occorso al jazz (e non) nei decenni successivi all'epoca storica del movimento specifico. Nitidissime le timbriche dei cinque strumenti, magistrale il loro intersecarsi, il loro prendere di volta in volta per mano la musica, trainandola come in un'ideale staffetta in cui ognuno debba per forza di cose remare nella direzione collettiva.

Nella rivisitazione del Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring, 14 movimenti) fanno curiosamente capolino, qua e là, inflessioni alla Nino Rota (primo e quarto movimento, per esempio) e alla Morricone (specificatamente La battaglia di Algeri, nel secondo movimento), con l'aplomb proprio della musica di tradizione "colta" a mischiarsi con intemperanze (relative, peraltro) più squisitamente jazzistico-contemporanee. Il clima è sostanzialmente cameristico (fisiologicamente, viene da dire) quanto vivo e flessibile. Ogni episodio (da mezzo minuto a poco più di cinque) ha una sua dimensione, una sua specificità, regolandoci quasi sempre qualche piccola o grande sorpresa.
Disco di notevole pregio.

Ascoltato il volume 1, bisogna ammettere che quello dedicato a Messiaen non ci fa la stessa (grande) impressione, pur trattandosi semprea scanso di equivocidi un signor disco. Rispetto al precedente (dipenderà anche dalla materia prima? why not?), appare infatti lievemente più rigido, stirato (con un tono qua e là vagamente liturgico, il che non è ovviamente un limite), più calligraficamente third stream-californiano, verrebbe da dire, meno espanso sul piano creativo, dell'inventiva. Più che nell'altro volume, centrale appare il ruolo del clarinetto, anche se tromba (sappiamo quanto nodale nella scrittura stravinskijana, nonché, curiosamente, rotiana e morriconiana, tanto per tornare a quanto rilevato poc'anzi) e soprattutto violoncello (tirato per lo più su registri e toni quasi violinistici) si distinguano a loro volta.
Dovendo giudicare il progetto come un unicum (ciò che in effetti è, anche perché coeva è l'incisione), tutto detto e considerato, ci troviamo di fronte un lavoro di grande spessore, originalità e pienezza ispirativa. Il che significa che da Eric Hofbauer, d'ora in poi, ci aspettiamo molto, ricambiandolo con un'attenzione un po' speciale.
